Condie Compass Course

The course is located in the Condie Nature Refuge (see side map) and is a 1.5 km introductory orienteering course.

Course starts on the north side of the reservoir near the picnic shelter.  The precise starting point is the washroom by the parking lot.  Course can be done either forward, or in reverse.  This allows 2 groups of students to start at the same time, but won't be following each other.

Pre-Teaching (see Orienteering Resources)

  • Teach students how to use a compass
  • Practice following compass bearing outdoors
  • Practice pacing with students.  Have them create their own Pacing Charts

Tips

  • On the student sheet, write down the letter that you find on each orienteering sign.  See if you can unscramble the letters to make 2 words.
  • Pacing is important! - being off track even a little can mean that you will miss the next point.
  • Students should be in small groups of 2-4 to do the course
  • Please don't touch any flagging tape or orienteering signs that you see.
  • Don't forget to enjoy the nature around you as you compass
