In this presentation, students measure antlers as biologists do. Biologist use this information to compare the health of a herd over time. Biologists are also studying antlers in the hopes of learning the secrets of rampant cell growth, secrets that may unlock cures to various forms of cancer. Grade 7 and 8 classes only.
Content:
Students will:
- measure the number and length of points on each antler, length of main beam, circumference of main beam between each point
- work in groups to measure antlers (using fractions), calculate totals, and compare different antlers
Preparation and set-up:
- Students must be proficient in adding 8 different mixed fractions with a common denominator.
- presentation needs to be in a room (library, science room) so students can work in groups around table
- students need pencils
