Students will have the opportunity to observe and measure various weather phenomenon and make predictions of weather based on natural and scientific signs.   The day will be spent hiking through the site looking for ways the weather has an impact on the area. Working in groups of 3, students will stop in different locations (valley bottom, top, beside the water) and collect data using weather instruments. The groups will record their data and complete their charts. Students will also have the opportunity to test out some weather proverbs that they have researched. Weather instruments include:
  1. Hygrometer to test relative humidity
  2. Thermometer for temperature
  3. Nephoscope to indicate cloud direction
  4. Anemometer to measure wind speed
Students will also be given solar beads to observe how ultraviolet light "sun tans" the beads. They will be able to test their sunscreen and sunglasses to see how effective they block uv rays.
Details of what materials to bring will be discussed in the class visit. See below for Outdoor Field Trip Student Checklist.
This trip requires a minimum of 3 parent volunteers
